The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) seeks applications for postdoctoral fellowships for the academic year 2026-27, with an option for an extension for a further year into 2027-2028. Founded in 2016, HCMH aims to promote the historical study of the Mediterranean in the University of Haifa within broad geographical, chronological and theoretical frameworks.

We are looking for candidates who can bring an innovative approach to the study of long-term history of the Mediterranean. For example, but not limited to, the study of cultural changes, the history of climate, migration, epidemics, social/religious tensions, cross-cultural relations, food security, and more. We encourage applications from candidates working in all related historical fields. Candidates should demonstrate academic excellence in their respective fields of expertise, as well as experience in organization of academic events.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by the beginning of the fellowship tenure period, and be no more than five years after its completion. 

We expect the successful candidate:

1. to devote their time to research and publication in the relevant scientific venues;
2. to organize a seminar series and a conference (to be funded by HCMH), focusing on one or several themes in Mediterranean history according to her/his research interests and in consultation with the HCMH’s directors;
3. to be present on the Haifa campus and take an active role in the academic life of HCMH: attend all seminars and lectures, present their research in various forums, meet informally with advanced students, etc.

The fellowship offers an annual stipend of 102,000 NIS (currently ~33,000 USD), for twelve months. It is advisable but not obligatory to obtain the sponsorship of a faculty member in the University of Haifa, with whom the candidate wishes to collaborate.

If interested and the opportunity arises, fellows may be allowed to teach at the University of Haifa (up to 2 weekly hours), as long as their research work is not impeded. Teaching is compensated separately by the relevant departments and is taxable.

• Statement of research plan, including plans for publication (2 pages, excluding bibliography)
• Proposed program for an international conference (1 page, list of potential invited speakers is optional but not mandatory)
• Proposed program for a seminar series (1 page, list of potential invited speakers is optional but not mandatory)
• Dissertation abstract (1 page)
• Statement of support from Haifa faculty member (if applicable)
• Writing sample (up to 8,000 words)
• Curriculum vitae, including list of publications
• Two references (emailed directly by referees)

CfA: Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 

The ERC project Local Law under Rome is offering a number of Postdoctoral fellowships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem beginning October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1^st 2021 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than the beginning of the Postdoctoral period are eligible to apply.

The successful candidate will be a part of an interdisciplinary team which will be engaged in comparative study of local legal cultures within their Roman imperial context. Together we seek to enhance the understanding of provincial legalism in its multiple manifestations.

We are seeking experts in one (or more) of the following legal traditions, who are committed to a contextual and historical analysis of legal materials:

(1) Legal papyrology (2) Roman law in the provinces, (3) Greek law during the Roman period, or (4) Early rabbinic law.  

The appointed fellow is expected to work closely with other team members. S/he will participate in the project’s ongoing activities and is expected to contribute to its collaborative outputs, produce project-related publications and provide materials for the comparative digital platform.

The scholarship is subject to review at the end of each year, and may extend up to 3 years. The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 11,000 NIS. Additional funding for travel for academic meetings will be available following approval. Preferably, the fellow will spend much of the academic year in Jerusalem, alongside other project members; however, there is room for flexibility pending on the project’s needs. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required.

Professor Douglas Cairns: “Hybris, Slavery and Dishonor”

David Konstan was Professor of Classics at Brown University until his retirement in 2010, and then continued to teach at NYU until his death at age 83. His work was prodigious to say the least, spanning hundreds of articles and dozens of influential books. A remarkably versatile scholar, David left an enduring legacy in his work on emotions, friendship, beauty, the Greek novel, and the history of moral and aesthetic concepts, to name a few. 

In all his writings, he showed an uncanny ability to deliver new insights, founded on theoretical sophistication and wide learning, in a winning, accessible, and humane style. And those lucky enough to have heard him speak will remember his marvelous sense of humor. 

He had many friends in Israel. He spent three months here in 2020-2021 as a fellow at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies in a research project called Triangulating Towards Socrates, during which time he played an instrumental role in creating both the Xenophon and the Socrates books series at de Gruyter Brill. He was a dear friend to more people than we can know, and is deeply missed by all.

Douglas Cairns is Professor of Classics in the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), and a Member of Academia Europaea (MAE). He is well known for his groundbreaking work on ancient Greek emotions, particularly shame/respect (aidōs), honour, and their moral psychology. He has published extensively on Homer, tragedy, Greek society and ethics, and cognitive approaches to Classics.

His influential monograph Aidōs: The Psychology and Ethics of Honour and Shame in Ancient Greek Literature (1993) remains a standard reference in the field.

His recent edited volumes include:

The roundtable will begin with a series of 5-minute introductory talks by six speakers, each presenting a focused idea, project, or challenge at the intersection of AI and Neo-Latin Studies. These short interventions will be followed by an open discussion, encouraging questions, reflections, and broader conversation among all participants.
