Matriculation in Latin in Israel
Since 2013, Latin studies have been held at the Israel High School for Sciences and Arts (YASA) in Jerusalem, supervised by the Department of Classical Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The studies continue from the 10th grade to the 12th grade.
From 2015, these studies are recognized by the Ministry of Education at the level of 5 matriculation units.
The curriculum was prepared by Ms. Ella Kaplan and Dr. Amit Bartz, with the academic advice of Dr. Amiel Vardi from the Department of Classical Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In Jerusalem, these Latin classes are open also to students from other high schools (as part of a “super-regional trend” in education).
Latin is studied at a high academic level. Towards the end of the programme, students master Latin at a level that allows them to read classical texts in the original language (e.g., Caesar, Cicero, Catullus, Virgil).
Matriculation studies in Latin are recognized for exemption from Latin studies at the following Israeli universities: the Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, Bar Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
