The Committee for Digital Resources of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies is pleased to invite you to a roundtable discussion entitled Artificial Intelligence and Neo-Latin Studies: Prospects and Concerns, to be held online, on Friday, 20 February 2026, 2:00-3:30PM CET.

The roundtable will begin with a series of 5-minute introductory talks by six speakers, each presenting a focused idea, project, or challenge at the intersection of AI and Neo-Latin Studies. These short interventions will be followed by an open discussion, encouraging questions, reflections, and broader conversation among all participants.

First Steps towards a Tailored LLM for Greek and Latin Scientific Texts Hybrid Workshop  

March 6th, 2026, 11:30–13:00 CET (Berlin / Online)

 At the conference: Historical Languages and AI 

This hands-on workshop brings together classicists, historians of science, and digital  humanities scholars to collaboratively build the foundation for something that doesn’t yet exist: a Language Model specifically trained for advanced scholarly analysis of texts written in Greek and Latin, across different historical periods. 

Why This Matters 

While impressive, current AI tools often hallucinate when working with ancient languages and fail to meet scholarly standards. Meanwhile, specialized “small LLMs” are transforming other fields by offering domain-specific expertise that general models cannot match. Historical languages deserve the same, and our aim is to build them together. 

What We’ll Do 

The workshop focuses on creating the essential first ingredient: a high-quality dataset of question-answer pairs, which we can then use to train the Language Model. You’ll write questions and model answers about content, style, terminology, and argumentation – the kind of analysis you already do. We’ll provide the templates, texts, and framework. Bring your laptop and your knowledge. 

No Technical Background Required: This workshop is designed for scholars, not programmers.  

The workshop will include: 

A brief introduction to how LLMs learn and work

An explanation on our joint task

Hands-on work

 Note: We will bring medical and philosophical texts from classical antiquity, but you are very welcome to bring texts from your own research, including later Greek and Latin material (e.g. Byzantine, medieval, or early modern), insofar as it involves comparable scholarly tasks.

TheERC project Romana – The Roman Turn among Jews, Greek Pagans and Christians is offering a number of visiting doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem beginning October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.  

Eligible are either doctoral students who wish to visit for up to one semester or scholars, who have received their Ph.D. after October 1 st , 2021 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than the beginning of the postdoctoral period. The successful candidate will be a part of a vibrant interdisciplinary team, which is engaged in the comparative study of philosophy, law and literature in the Roman Empire, with special attention to interdisciplinary studies of texts in Latin, Greek and Hebrew/Aramaic. We are seeking experts in one (or more) of the following areas:  

1) New Testament or Early Christianity in the Roman Empire 

2) Rabbinic Literature in a Roman Context 

3)   Latin and Greek philosophy in the Roman Empire 

4)   Roman law in comparative perspective 

5)   Greek literature in the Roman Empire 

The appointed fellow will do independent work on the original sources in close cooperation with other team members, attend the weekly seminars and offer a weekly reading group for one semester. S/he will participate in the project’s ongoing activities, contribute to its collaborative outputs, produce project-related publications and initiate academic exchange.  The scholarship will be granted either for a short-term visit or for one post-doctoral year with the possibility of extension for one or two more years, with a monthly stipend of approximately 11,000 NIS. The fellow will have an office in the area of the ERC project at the Mount Scopus Campus in Jerusalem and is expected to be present there regularly. Hebrew is not required.
